It's always been heavy handed, it works on a 'block everything' principle. ![]() It's usually off by default, so you must have turned it on. Before you continue to troubleshoot the 'Controlled Folder Access blocks 'program.exe' from making changes to memory' problem, proceed and ensure that your computer is clean from viruses or/and malicious programs, by using the instructions in this Malware Scan and Removal Guide. I am assuming (hoping) that since the message was triggered by a Microsoft update, it is innocuous and that I can unblock the change, but I will wait for the experts here to confirm that opinion before I do. Controlled Folder Access is a heavy handed security measure that means only Windows itself can modify certain things. All was well for several days until I allowed the two Microsoft updates below to install, one of which triggered the message again:ġ) 2021-09 Update for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for 圆4 based Systems (KB4023057), which when clicked on said: KB4023057: Update for Windows Update Service componentsĢ) Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus – KB2267062 (Version 1.353.743.0), which when clicked on said: Security intelligence updates for Microsoft Defender Antivirus and other Microsoft antimalware. ![]() ![]() I successfully resolved it (got the Unauthorized changes blocked message to stop) by restoring a full disk image backup from before the message began and then restoring my data files from a current backup.
